Banquet Bartender (Part - Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part - time, as needed, Banquet Bartender for special events. This position provides guests an unparalleled customer service experience.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable preparing drink orders for guests according to specified recipes using measuring systems. Issue, open, and serve wine/champagne bottles. Set up and maintain cleanliness and condition of bar, bar unit, tables, and other tools. Prepare fresh garnishes for drinks. Stock ice, glassware, and paper supplies. Transport supplies to bar set-up area. Wash soiled glassware. Remove soiled wares from bar top and tables and place in designated area. Anticipate and communicate replenishment needs. Process all payment methods. Count bank at end of shift, complete designated cashier reports, resolve any discrepancies, drop off receipts, and secure bank. Secure liquors, beers, wines, coolers, cabinets, and storage areas. Complete closing duties.

This position requires Saturday and Sunday availability. Holidays and some evenings are required. The San Diego Natural History Museum is open daily, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Major Responsibilities:

Follow Museum and Department safety and security policies and procedures to ensure a clean, safe, and secure environment.

Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with other employees and departments.

Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift.

Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 25 pounds without assistance.

Must possess valid food handler card or willing to get in first (30) days of employment.

Strong math aptitude.

Must be T.I.P.S, L.E.A.D., ServSafe certified or willing to get in first (30) days of employment.

Camp Teaching Assistant (Part - Time, Seasonal)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is looking to hire a summer camp teaching assistant.

This will be a seasonal summer position June 13 through August 24, 2022.

Position Summary:

The Camp Teaching Assistant (CTA) will assist in providing dynamic mission driven educational summer programming for grades 1-8 using an interactive, engaging, inquiry-based learning style. This is a seasonal position only.

Primary Functions and Major Responsibilities:

The Camp Teaching Assistant will help camp instructor and program to ensure a quality experience to our participating campers.

Responsibilities include:

Primary focus will be to assist the camp instructor. CTA should expect to facilitate and participate in a wide variety of activities. Deliver fun and educational programs to our campers.

Assist in the mentorship and leadership of youth volunteers.

Preparation, set-up and clean-up of camp supplies, equipment and classrooms.

Create a positive and welcoming environment for campers and their families.

Assist at drop-off, pick-up and lunch times.

Inspire campers in a positive and engaging manner.

Establish and maintain a professional rapport with camp and Museum staff.

Represent oneself and the Museum in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner.

Ensure the highest level of safety both physically and emotionally.

Follow Museum policy and procedure.

Opportunities to teach and lead lessons and activities.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Must have one year college experience or work experience out of high school.

Knowledge of the San Diego Natural History Museum (or willing to learn).

Knowledge of the natural world and/or camp subject (or willing to learn).

Prior experience working with children in a camp or classroom environment.

Interpersonal skills.

Must be punctual and dependable.

Demonstrated handling of oneself in a professional manner.

Entomology Lab Technician (Part - Time, Temporary)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is looking to hire a part-time Entomology Lab Technician

to assist with various projects within the Entomology Department.

Position Summary:

The Entomology Lab Technician assists the Curator of Entomology and Entomology Collections Manager to perform a variety of both technical and routine duties, especially those related to the successful completion of department grants and contracts. The primary responsibilities of the incumbent will be to image and database specimens, assist with data management associated with the collection, and improve the quality of the collection.

Major Responsibilities:

Specimen digitization

: Imaging and databasing of scientific specimens, including high resolution photography of insects and processing of image files; database entry of specimen information using standardized procedures and ensuring data quality control for various projects within the department

Collections management

: Careful handling of natural history specimens; facilitating collection growth and improving use and access of collection; processing incoming specimens, packing and sending approved specimen loans to researchers in a timely manner; accessioning and filing of specimens into collection; pest management procedures, improving specimen storage by implementing current housing practices and protocols

Research and contract assistance

: Taxonomic research and identification of insects; assistance with field work and biological contract work, as available

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED

Generalized familiarity with computers, smartphones, tablets, and keyboarding.

Minimum of 3 months of experience working with biological collections (preferred).

Time Commitment:

Candidates must be able to commit to at least 8 hours per week, but are unlikely to be asked to work more than 20 hours per week. Hours of work fall within regular weekday museum operating hours only (7am-530pm).

Pay:

$16/hour provisionally until 31 August 2022 (dependent on continued funding availability)

Lead Banquet Bartender (Part - Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part - time, as needed, Lead Banquet Bartender for special events. This position provides guests an unparalleled customer service experience. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing bar staff, preparing and serving drinks, while continually maintaining a pleasant and professional demeanor.

Roles and responsibilities:

Follow appropriate procedures for serving alcohol. (T.I.P.S., L.E.A.D., ServSafe)

Supervises and address employee issues and general issues at the bar.

Prepare alcohol and non-alcohol beverages (including garnishes for mixed drinks) for patrons.

Interact with bar customers to take and serve beverage orders while ensuring all other bartenders are doing the same.

Check customer identification and confirm legal drinking age is met.

Strictly follows serving guidelines to all guests with attention to intoxicated customers; makes judgements regarding when to slow a guest down or cut them off.

Knowledge of the bar menu options to answer guest inquiries and requests in a courteous and polite manner.

Provide the highest-level of customer service to our guests (both internal and external) through active engagement and a friendly attitude.

Paleontological Specialist (Part - Time, Temporary) [HOLD]

The Department of Paleontology at the San Diego Natural History Museum has an opening for paleontological field monitor. This position will be part-time temporary, as needed (0 – 29 hours per week). All work is funded through contracts.

The San Diego Natural History Museum is run and operated by the San Diego Society of Natural History, a private non-profit scientific organization incorporated in 1874. The Museum’s mission is to interpret the natural world through research, education and exhibits; to promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California; and to inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment.

Within the Museum, the Department of PaleoServices specializes in paleontological resource management. Our focus is on the recognition, recovery, and preservation of the significant and unique paleontological resources that occur in the greater southern California region.

Major Responsibilities:

Field monitoring of active mass grading, trenching, and other excavation activities into potentially fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks (Cenozoic and upper Mesozoic marine and/or non-marine rock units) in the greater southern California region.

Field monitor will work in close proximity to heavy equipment and be expected to work safely, to collect unearthed fossils, and to record relevant stratigraphic and taphonomic data.

Field monitoring can include working at distant locations for a week at a time, with commensurate reimbursement of per diem and mileage.

Opportunities for field survey work and fossil preparation are also possible.

Scheduled work hours are typically between the hours of 7 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday; however, work may also occur at night or on weekends.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a B.S. in Geology or a related discipline with an emphasis in paleontology.

Experience in field paleontology and stratigraphy is preferred.

Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs

Have a valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record.

Parker Photo Apprentice (Part – Time, Temporary)

Apprentices will learn about historical and modern photography practices by digitizing, organizing, and preserving a collection of 2,000 glass negatives representing natural history of San Diego from the early 1900’s.

Position Summary:

Under the guidance of the Research Library Director & Curator, Apprentices will receive instruction on glass plate technology, proper collections care for photographic materials, digitization procedures and standards, and digital asset management. Apprentices will also be trained in social media marketing and public speaking. By the conclusion of the apprenticeship program, the students will have gained 21st century skills in media, technology, data management, and digital communication, and the broader San Diego community will gain open access to a treasure trove of photographs from San Diego’s past.

Primary responsibilities include:

Glass plate digitization

Metadata description and digital asset management

Archival level re-housing

Secondary responsibilities include:

Historical, biographical, and/or scientific research

Creation of finding aids

Science communication in the form of social media posts and presentations to SDNHM staff

Qualifications

Security Officer (Part-Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking intuitive, reliable, attentive, detail-oriented individuals with strong communication and customer service skills as part-time/as-needed Security Officers. Security Officers are expected to uphold Museum rules and regulations by patrolling, observing, and reporting to the Facilities Supervisor and Senior Director of Operations. Security Officers are also expected to set the example for Museum safety and stellar customer service, and assist Museum guests, employees, and vendors during emergency situations.

Areas of responsibilities include:

Patrol, observe, and report to Facilities Supervisor and Senior Director of Operations.

Provide a high level of customer service and assistance to all Museum guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.

Respond to complaints and/or requests for assistance and evaluate appropriate course of action.

Assist with building access and receiving/deliveries.

Perform other duties assigned by Facilities Supervisor and Senior Director of Operations.

Qualifications:

Previous security experience at a cultural institution is preferred

Excellent customer service skills with the ability to maintain a professional and calm demeanor in a challenging, dynamic environment with all types of guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.

Strong communication skills with attention to detail.

Must be able stand for long periods of time, respond quickly and communicate verbally for the majority of each shift.

Ability to perform crowd control by providing clear guidance and direction

Current Guard Card certification through BSIS

Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
