  9. Construction Technician

  10. Carpenter Helper
Help carpenters by performing duties of lesser skill. Duties include using, supplying, or holding materials or tools and cleaning work area and equipment.
Job duties helpers do for carpenters:
  • Position and hold timbers, lumber, and paneling in place for fastening or cutting.
  • Erect scaffolding, shoring, and braces.
  • Select tools, equipment, and materials from storage and transport items to work site.
  • Fasten timbers or lumber with glue, screws, pegs, or nails and install hardware.
  • Clean work areas, machines, and equipment to maintain a clean and safe job site.
  • Hold plumb bobs, sighting rods, or other equipment to aid in establishing reference points and lines.
  • Align, straighten, plumb, and square forms for installation.

  • Perform tie spacing layout and measure, mark, drill, or cut. ($12 an hour.)
Most all of the part-time jobs listed above need only a high school diploma, and sometimes vocation training is helpful. Sometimes tools are also needed on the job like hammers and saws. Construction pays very well as a full-time profession as well. It often involves long hours in the sun, the cold weather, or the rain if the job is outside. Sometimes new construction jobs that involve finishing the inside allow workers some protection from the elements, but not often if the central air and heat is not completed.

Work hours are usually during daylight. Overtime can be done during the weekend days. Men generally like these construction jobs, but it is becoming more common for women to make this career choice. Generally, it is a job for people who like to work outside and with their hands, whether it is commercial construction or housing.

With the onset of the financial crisis in the last year which continues to loom overhead, a wise person might ask how that will affect the part-time construction jobs. At the first of the crisis we heard about a lot of banks failing and merging with other banks. The housing market was tumbling down and housing prices were dropping lower. In fact, that market is expected to continue downward, but all the construction jobs displaced by the housing market will find their way back to the top in a different market. The hospital construction has not slowed down with the market and it is expected to continue on a steady course. The government is projecting a great infrastructure boom because the president will be investing billions of dollars in government funding into infrastructure repairs. This is something the country needed to do for its schools, highways, sewers, and prisons. So while one market slips out of the scene, a new market will offer a place for trades to shift. Construction is alive.
