There are so many facets of the industry that are available, so your specialty is what will dictate how you go about finding a job in this niche. Of course, there are some old standards to explore that will work with anything you do. Regardless, you will want to explore every avenue to make sure you present yourself with the fullest amount of choices before making a decision while you are trying to find a new job.
If you are a student looking to find a new job, the first place you can look is on your own campus. Be it during the summer or actually during a school semester, a lot of departments will hire students for a part time job during the school year. It may not have all the glory of working in some fancy lab, but you aren’t going to have to travel very far and it will also probably get you brownie points with your teachers!
Job fairs are also going to be a great place to locate a new part time job. Again, your college campus with probably have their fair share of job fairs over the course of the school year and if you are attending, just check with your guidance counselor to find out when and where they are going to be. If you live around a college campus, you can find out when the fairs are and check to see if outsiders can come also. Sometimes the schools will make them a private event so that only their students can check out the jobs, but you will surprised at the amount of them that will allow anyone to attend during a restricted time.
The next place you can look is on the job boards of the particular companies that you are interested in. Most of these companies have taken the hint at how successful national job search sites have been and have taken out the middle man. You can usually just go to a company site and look for job opportunities on an employment tab. You can sign up for your own account and then you have access to all of the jobs. These sites are open to everyone, but not a lot of people are aware of hunting for a job this way. This is especially true of part time positions. They are more likely to put it up here and let it get filled when they are not adding a full time staff member.
While you are on the net you can check the major job search engines. The tricky part here is trying to find a part time job. Initially it will look like all you are able to locate is full time positions. Most sites will have a specific area to go to when you are looking for part time work. Again, this is not something that a lot of people know about when they are looking for a job, so it is something that you can take advantage of. If the site doesn’t have a part time tab, just make sure that you put ‘part time’ into your search when you conduct it and you should have more than enough hits come out of it.
Again, on the net you can check industry specific job search engines. This will be slightly different from the two engines above as they are not loyal to any one company and do not list positions available for any other jobs except a specific industry. Each of these are going to offer many different types of positions and you are going to want to make sure that you get used to using all three of them when doing your searches.
Help wanted ads are also a great place to locate part time work. Make sure you check them every day, not just on Sunday. You will actually probably have a better chance of landing a position that is only posted during the week as many people only check the Sunday edition and don’t realize how many positions are posted on a daily basis. You can also check the neighborhood papers and county papers. Some smaller business may not have enough money to put an ad in the city paper, so they will same some money and put it in several local papers instead.
Cold calling is a little old fashioned, but it is still an effective way to land a job, especially when it’s a part time one. Some companies may not even realize they need help until you call them up and ask them if they are hiring. All of a sudden a bell goes off that they can fill one full time position by hiring two part time employees. Furthermore, by calling in, you may be privy to a job that has not even been posted on any site or paper yet. It is always a good idea to call the human resources department to see what is available.
When you are trying to find a new part time job in the science industry, you should have no problems finding opportunities. With all of the areas that have been covered here, you will be busy each and every day locating positions. Just make sure you have your resume right and have practiced interviewing so that you can land the position after you have located it!
